Random photo I shot in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. For those of you who are interested, Elmwood Cemetery offers tours.

Alright here’s something to ask your self? You go on a vacation, in the process of it all if you’re looking for something truly unique to do while on vacation with friends, or family. Here’s a suggestion, why not visit a local cemetery or two! For one thing visiting cemeteries while on vacation for the most part is inexpensive. Most cemeteries do not charge an admission fee, and if they do the fee is usually a small amount to pay.

For example to take advantage of the interpretative tour bus service at Arlington National Cemetery, across the river from Washington, DC. The prices you’d be paying include: Adults: $8.75, Children (Ages 3-11): $4.50, Senior Citizen (Individuals 65 years or older): $7.50, Groups (20 or more people) for public tour: $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. It’s unknown to me what the fee is to enter the cemetery. Unfortunately you’d also be paying for parking at the price of $1.75/hour for the first three hours, and $2.50/hour thereafter. –Arlington National Cemetery

Most of the historic cemeteries around the United States, and the world offer guided tours of the cemetery you’re visiting. If your going to be in Los Angeles and happen to find your way to the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Ask about the tours being offered by the lovely Karie Bible. She’s the tour guide at Hollywood Forever, who’s seriously knowledgeable about the Hollywood movers and shakers buried within the tranquil confines of the cemetery. If you do find your self taking one of Karie’s tours. Please let her know “The Motor City Morbid One” sent you. She’s a friend of mine, and I highly recommend her tour. You can find more info about the tours Karie offers at the website she maintains for her tour.

While visiting cemeteries on vacation might not be your cup of tea. You definitely should give it a try. Cemeteries are a perfect match for history buffs, people into genealogy, or if you’d like to do something out of the typical norm while on vacation. Whether your into visiting the graves of famous or notable people, like me. Or your into visiting cemeteries for genealogical reasons. Not only that having a discussion with a friend, or relative about a cemetery you visited, not to mention who you found, make for intriguing conversations as well. I love to have discussions about the cemeteries/memorial parks I’ve visited. I can pretty much go on for hours about the famous, and notable graves I’ve found, and the unusual monuments, and mausoleums I photographed.

Here are some useful tidbits to keep in mind if you plan to take my advice and visit a local cemetery while you’re on vacation.

1. Be prepared to snap lots of photos at different angles/points of view.

2. Dress comfortably, and be prepared to do A LOT of walking.

3. Be respectful, don’t litter, or vandalize ANYTHING.

4. Stop in the cemetery office or gift shop. Inquire if they’ve got maps, books, or pamphlets for sale. These things will usually highlight the notable/famous personalities who call the sacred ground their forever home.

5. Look into tours being offered at the cemetery (Call ahead for that to be prepared).

6. Have fun, and I mean LOTS of fun.

7. Do research before your visit. Online resources such as Find A Grave.com  are a great place to start.

8. Drink water, to keep your self hydrated especially if its hot, and humid in the region.

Lastly, if you have any questions about visiting cemeteries while on vacation, or in general. Please don’t hesitate to email me and ask questions.

Photo I found browsing around Google. I do not own this photo.

As previously mentioned I’m heading back to Los Angeles October 2nd through the 15th. With that being said I thought I’d give you a taste of what I plan to be doing while I’m strolling along the cemeteries in and around Tinseltown. But first before I do that, I thought I’d mention that after I came home from the last L.A. Gravecation in 2011, I decided that I’d make my presence known once again in L.A. this time around for the 15th Annual Hollywood Underground Dinner. For some reason that I don’t have the answers to the annual Hollywood Underground Dinner, pretty much morphed into the 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend. So being that I originally planned to be in the area during the 15th Annual Hollywood Underground Dinner(which morphed into the 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend), I felt that it would only be fittingly proper to take part in the 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend

The 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend. Is being organized by the undisputed King of the Death Hag’s, and my friend Scott Michaels. If you’re not aware, Scott is the owner/curator of Find A Death.com. Find A Death.com caters to anyone who has an interest in the deaths of the worlds most beloved celebrities, and otherwise obscurely notable personalities. Scott is also the proprietor of one of the BEST sightseeing tour venues in Hollywood, namely Dearly Departed Tours. Dearly Departed Tours, takes tourists from around the globe, on a two-hour joyride around Hollywood, to visit the sites where celebrities were involved in some sort of ill-conceived scandal, or unfortunately met their untimely demise. Needless to say with Scott’s experience its only fitting that he is the organizer of the 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend.

If your interested in browsing around the official website for the 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend. Where you will find seven weekend package options to choose from, and a bunch of other goodies. You should visit DDTWeekend.com. Or you could visit the official Facebook page for the 1st Annual Death Hag Weekend. On a personal note I went with weekend package #2 The (John Holmes) Elongated Package which includes all the following:

The Friday Night Union Theater Reception

Entertainment Provided by Virtual Campfire

Special Guest: Bill Murphy of SyFy’s Fact or Fiction

A Presentation by Scott Michaels

Saturday Dearly Departed Tour – The Tragical History Tour

Saturday Night Reception & Buffet Dinner at Mountain View Mausoleum

Hosted by Scott Michaels

Presentations by Mark Masek, & L.A. County Chief Coroner Craig Harvey

The centerpiece of my 2012 L.A. gravecation trek. Is to visit the cemeteries I did not get the chance to visit the last time I was in town in 2011. The cemetery list I’ve compiled which is included below will give you a general idea of the cemeteries I plan to visit, and in some cases revisit. Please keep in mind this is just a tentative list I’ve compiled, which will more than likely change.

Cemeteries I plan to visit:

Mount Sinai Memorial Park
Valhalla Memorial Park
Inglewood Park Cemetery
Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery
Evergreen Cemetery
Woodlawn Cemetery Santa Monica
Forest Lawn – Glendale
Grand View Memorial Park
Oakwood Memorial Park
El Toro Memorial Park (Orange County)

Cemeteries I plan to revisit:

Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills
Westwood Memorial Park
Hollywood Forever
Calvary Cemetery
Eden Memorial Park
Pacific View Memorial Park (Orange County)

Closing out my second visit to Los Angeles. I plan to checkout the job situation in the booming film & television industry in Southern California. I’m in the process of making plans to meet with a few people who are actively involved in the film & television industry, to garner advice, & feedback from them and possibly develop some contacts. For when I eventually move to Los Angeles in a few years. That way I’ll hopefully have a possible job lined up as a Production Assistant once I finally relocate to Los Angeles. Needless to say this trip is a mixture of business with pleasure. I’m seriously looking forward to my second Los Angeles visit.

LA Gravecation: Day 9-11 Sometimes Even The Best Things Need To End!

On Thursday June 2nd I realized I had two days left to do some grave hunting before it was time to head home to Motown the following Saturday. So in typical fashion (as I usually do in situations such as this) I kicked things up a notch.

On Thursday, I decided to continue checking out what The OC (Orange County) cemeteries had to offer. So I cruised over to Pacific View Memorial Park which is in Corona Del Mar, California. Pacific View Memorial Park, is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I’ve ever visited in all my years in the hobby. At the top of the hill near the tranquil garden of cremains, you will find picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about taking any photos of the scenic ocean views. I seriously wish I did.

While I was at Pacific View Memorial Park, I found a decent amount famous people. The most famous of them all and probably in ALL of Orange County is western actor John Wayne. He’s buried several feet down the hillside slope from his first wife, and daughter. Another gravesite I strolled by and photographed was Charles Quilter who was a United States Marine Corps Major General. He served in three wars (WWII, Korea, & Vietnam).

Also at Pacific View Memorial Park, from the world of silent films I found the gravesite of Marion Mack, who is buried under her married name Joey Marion Lewyn. At the time of her death she was married to film producer Lewis Lewyn who is buried next to her. Also from the world of silent films I found the gravesite of Edmund “Eddie” Burns who got his start in motion pictures as an extra in the epic D.W. Griffith film The Birth of a Nation. So that pretty much wraps up Pacific View Memorial Park. There were a few other gravesites I photographed and others I planned to check out. But I left the cemetery to get a soda, and found my self driving down the coast, where I once again ended up in LA.

After arriving in LA, I stopped by the LA County Coroner’s office. Much to my surprise the LA County Coroner’s office has a gift shop there are only two coroners offices that have a gift shop the other being the Las Vegas coroners office, and to top it off my good friend Jayne Osborne works in the Notifications Department at the LA County Coroner’s office. So I thought I’d swing by and bought some official LA County Coroner swag. I bought two t-shirts, and a tank top. One of those shirts was for my good friend and Detroit graving sidekick, Beth. After leaving the gift shop at the coroner’s office, I went down to Hollywood Boulevard, and stopped by the Hollywood Harley-Davidson store. At the Hollywood HD store, I bought two t-shirts. One for me, and another for my friend Art.

After doing a little souvenir shopping for friends back home. I cruised over to Hollywood Forever cemetery again. After giving the security guard, a friendly wave as I drove through the gate. I stopped in the Jewish section of the cemetery. I then pulled out my trusty & colorful Hollywood Forever cemetery map, (which by the way I paid $5 bucks for) to pin point the location of Paul Muni. He was one of the gravesites I had the utmost wish to visit while I was in LA. So after some brief searching, I found his final resting place. Paul Muni’s gravesite is marked by a tall tree as most of the famous people in the cemetery have trees above their respective markers.

I heard from one of my friends during a previous trek of Hollywood Forever that a group of volunteers planted the trees at various celebrity gravesites in the cemetery to mark their gravesite. Anyway Paul Muni was in a series of great topnotch films during his heyday. Those films include “The Story of Louis Pasteur” where he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also starred in “The Life of Emil Zola” (1937), “The Good Earth” (1937), the original “Scarface” (1932), “Angel on My Shoulder” (1946) and “I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” (1932). I’ve only seen “I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” and the original “Scarface” both great films which I highly recommend. The original Scarface also stars George Raft who I visited the previous day. After everything I did Thursday, I headed back to Anaheim, but not before stopping by the cigar shop I found nearby where I was staying to pick up some cigars.

Friday being the last official day of grave hunting in LA, before heading home.  So what did I do? I went to five cemeteries located around the Los Angeles area. Being that my friends who accompanied me the previous days during the gravecation had other things to do. I wanted to make this day the day I would go all out and wrap up the great LA gravecation in a stunning array of insane blaze & glory. So off I went. The first cemetery I checked out on Friday was Calvary cemetery. Calvary is one of the oldest catholic cemeteries in Los Angeles. At Calvary I found gangster Jack Dragna, the silent film sibling trio, John, Ethel, & Lionel Barrymore, who got their start in silent films. Ramon Novarro who was a silent era actor, and early talkie film personality, he was brutally murdered by two brothers. Other celebrities I found at Calvary included silent era starlet Pola Negri, & Mary Philbin, Ted Healy who was the creator of The Three Stooges. There were a few more gravesites I found at Calvary but the names I mentioned should give you a general idea on who I found. If your interested you should check out Find a Grave.com for a good list of who’s buried there.

After leaving Calvary I drove across the street to its Jewish counterpart, namely Home of Peace cemetery. Before I get started with Home of Peace feel free to check out the Home of Peace page on Find a Grave. So let’s get underway. At Home of Peace, I found the gravesite of Curly & Shemp Howard of The Three Stooges, I also found comedian Harry Einstein, Carl Laemmle Sr. & Jr. MGM executive Louis B. Mayer. The Warner Bros (Harry, Jack, & Samuel), along with motion picture director Charles Vidor. So that pretty much sums up Home of Peace. At Eden Memorial Park, I found the gravesites of one of the greatest slapstick comedians of ALL time, Groucho Marx, I also found the gravesite of controversial yet hilarious comedian Lenny Bruce.

Rounding off Friday, I strolled over to Hollywood Forever again. At Hollywood Forever I tried to find the gravesite with no such luck of Tamara Toumanova who was a Russian actress, and ballerina. After leaving Hollywood Forever, I cruised over to Westwood Memorial Park yet again, to try to find the gravesite of James Wong Howe, who was a well-known cinematographer in the silent, and early talkie eras of Hollywood. Being that he was one of the gravesites I really wanted to find I unfortunately had no such luck. So I called an end to the very productive week-long graving extravaganza, went to the cigar shop I mentioned above, and called it a day.

While there is still very much more I want to see in LA, and Orange County. I gotta say I had one of the best gravecations in a LONG time. I met with some friends who up until recently I only corresponded with online. I hope to visit Los Angeles again in the very near future, hopefully one more time before I eventually move there. The area has a ridiculously insane amount of celebrities buried there.
