Gangsters In Granite, Joshua D. Perry, The Gravecast Blog

I’ve given some thought on the longevity of The Gravecast Blog. This blog has been around for six years. Through those years which started out as a small project to appease my interest in finding the graves of anyone who was infamous, famous, & notable in someway.

This hobby known as grave hunting would eventually explode into a cross-country roller coaster of vacations. Which included documenting the graves of people like Cecil B. DeMille, Bugsy Siegel, and many other Hollywood luminaries. Not to mention rubbing elbows with people who share the same morbid interests as me. Those likeminded morbid friends have since come to be some of my closest friends I’ve had the delightful honor of knowing.

I’ve come to hold the hobby of Grave Hunting very near to my spiritual mind, & soul. Which brings me the topic of this article. It’s with a heavy heart that I announce I’ve decided to take an extended break from working on this blog. Now keep in mind I’m not leaving the hobby, or abandoning the blog. I just need some time to workout some ideas related to another direction I want this blog to go into.

This much-needed break from The Gravecast Blog. Will give me a chance to focus my energy on other grave hunting related side projects. Most notably the “Gangsters In Granite” website, book, and video series I’m currently developing, and trying to get off the ground.

If you’re interested in learning more about my “Gangsters In Granite” project. Feel free to visit Gangsters In Granite.net. To summarize “Gangsters In Granite: A Graveside Guide To Organized Crime” chronicles the graves of “reputed” mobsters in the United States over the last 100 years.

Included in the book will be graveside photos to go with the concise biographies of the “reputed” mobsters. On the website there will be documents like death certificates, autopsy reports, postmortem photos, and morbid things of that sort. To act as a supplement to the biographies in the book, and on the website. I’m hoping that this project will be another method for people to interpret the history of organized crime in the United States.

Keep in mind The Gangsters In Granite book, & website will make no attempt to shed “new light” into the history of organized crime. But will make every attempt that the biographical info I offer based upon my research is truthful, factual, and verifiable. This project is my way of interpreting the history of organized crime. By locating, documenting, & photographing the graves of “reputed” mobsters. I’m just choosing to share my findings with the world.

If you’d like to connect with Gangsters In Granite. Feel free to visit Facebook, or bookmark the official website Gangsters In Granite.

In October 2012, I jump started a campaign, through the IndieGogo.com crowd funding website. To help fund the research of the book I’m writing titled “Gangsters In Granite: A National Graveside Index of Reputed Mobsters.” The campaign ran for about three months, and ended on New Years Eve 2012. I’m delighted to inform you that more than half of the desired goal of what I was trying to raise was accomplished. The money raised when it’s finally deposited into my checking account from IndieGogo. Will be used for the procurement of books used in the research phase of this project. The money will also be used to get xerox copies of old newspaper articles, I’ve obtained from browsing microfilm reels, and other academic related crime periodicals, I’ll be procuring to further my research.

If you’re interested in aiding in the research of this book as a photo contributor, or with the contribution of information. Please email me whenever you feel is convenient. To make a long story short I’ve got an extensive list of mafia gravesites from around The United States which I’d most definitely LOVE photos of. If you do contribute factual/verifiable data, and/or photos, you will get credit with your name mentioned in the book as a photo, and/or info contributor. I’m really looking forward to hearing from you.

Once again for those of you who are interested and/or who follow this blog, and the videos I create and upload to You Tube. I’ve recently uploaded the latest installment of the popular “Gangsters In Granite” series to You Tube. Feel free to check out the latest installment to the “Gangsters In Granite” series below.

This film is on “Ragtime” Joe Howard? I bet you’re wondering just who “Ragtime” Joe was. Well for starters he wasn’t really anyone of huge importance. He was just a small time hood during the roaring 20s era in Chicago.

His only real claim to fame happens to be that he allegedly slapped around Greasy Thumb Jake Guzik, who was an alleged pimp, and Al Capone’s financial wizard of sorts. Well to make a long story short Al Capone found out about this little slap happy episode then took it upon him self and pumped six bullets into the body of “Ragtime” Joe.

So that’s the brief and concise story of “Ragtime” Joe. Feel free to rate my film, favorite it if you like, and by all means let me know what you think. I really enjoy and take to heart the positive, and constructive feedback I get on my films.

For those of you who are interested. I’ve uploaded a new film to YouTube related to my Gangsters In Granite graveside film series. My latest film titled Gangsters In Granite Vol. XI – Danny Stanton. Is a biographical narration on the life of 1920s era Chicago Labor Racketeer Danny Stanton, who is buried in Chicago’s Mt. Olivet cemetery. For your viewing enjoyment the video is posted below. Let me know what you think, I love getting feedback on the films I create.

On a lighter note I’ve recently uploaded the footage from the second MiniDV tape I recorded in Chicago over two years ago. So I’ll be busy in the coming month or so editing the old footage to include voice-over narration, and photos. I’m now in the process of editing, all my old footage from cemeteries in the Detroit and Chicago area. Due to the grave hunting season being over for me because of the snow, and ice on the ground. I figure I’ll spend the off-season editing, the older footage, when I find the time to do so.

For those of you who follow my blog, I’d like to bring you up to speed on my film uploads to You Tube. For your viewing enjoyment I introduce to you the latest installments of my Gangsters In Granite Chicago Style series. Volumes IX, and X.

Here is Volume IX. Its kinda a two for one deal being that these two gangsters Tim Murphy & John Oberta were married to the same woman at two different times. It just so happens that they are buried in the same plot. Unfortunately John Oberta is in an unmarked grave.

And here’s Vol. X. This installment of Gangsters In Granite is on Joseph Saltis/Soltis who was the ruthless sidekick to psychopathic homicidal killer Frank McErlane on the Southwest side of Chicago. Saltis and McErlane were the leaders of the Saltis/McErlane mob.
