Continuing on with the recap extravaganza this week. From when I went to Los Angeles, last Spring, to go nuts in the cemeteries, where anyone who was ANYTHING in Hollywood is buried. In today’s revisited recap I will feature Hollywood Forever cemetery.

To give you the background on Hollywood Forever. The cemetery was originally called Hollywood Memorial Park, and is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. Founded in 1899 by Isaac Lankershim, and his son-in-law Isaac Van Nuys. As time went on, the cemetery owners Lankershim & Van Nuys sold off large tracts of land in the rear part of the cemetery to nearby Paramount Studios, another part of the cemetery was set aside for the creation of Beth Olam cemetery which is a Jewish cemetery located within the grounds of Hollywood Forever.

In 1939 a convicted felon by the name of Jules Roth, purchased the cemetery, and then plundered the money which was supposed to be used for the general operations of the cemetery, and thus the cemetery fell into disrepair, and was in the process of being shut down. That is until Tyler Cassity, who came from a long line of relatives  involved in the funeral & cemetery industry, and purchased the 62-acre, hollowed ground for under $400k. So that pretty much gives you the background of Hollywood Forever.

There is a never-ending cast of élite Hollywood stars who call the cemetery their final home. From the world of silent films comes Rudolf Valentino, Barbara La Marr, The Talmadge Sisters (Constance, Norma, & Natalie), William Desmond Taylor who is buried under his real name of Tanner. From the world of crime comes Bugsy Siegel, & Moe Sedway. Other classic stars include Paul Muni, Harold Rosson. Dee Dee & Johnny Ramone, Peter Lorre, & Jesse Lasky, and many other celebrities.

If your interested, the cemetery gift shop sells a colorful cemetery map, marking the gravesites of celebrities in buried in the cemetery, along with “The Official Walking Directory of Hollywood Forever” which is a 47-page booklet with biographical narratives, and photos of the celebrities buried in the cemetery. Another thing I’d recommend getting if you plan on visiting Hollywood Forever is the book “The Stars of Hollywood Forever: A Who’s Who Guide of Hollywood’s Final Resting Place” this particular book is written by Tony L. Scott, I highly recommend the book and any future editions you can get your hands on. T.L Scott has a website which you can visit my clicking here. So now that I got all that out-of-the-way who’s ready to see some gravesite photos? Please navigate at your leisure the photo slideshow below. Just a FYI tomorrow I’ll be going over Westwood Memorial Park. Enjoy!

As some of you know I’m doing L.A. Gravecation Revisited posts for the next few days. The next cemetery being featured is Holy Cross cemetery, which is at 5835 West Slauson Avenue, Culver City, California. Holy Cross cemetery encompasses 200 acres of lush manicured lawns, a grotto section, and a few mausoleum buildings. The cemetery is owned and managed by the archdiocese of Los Angeles, and includes a full cast of celebrity personalities from the golden years of Hollywood, up into today. If your interested I invite you to check out the Holy Cross cemetery Wikipedia page, or Find A Grave, to check out the who’s who list of celebrities buried in this tranquil catholic cemetery.

Joining me at Holy Cross cemetery, were my very good friends & L.A. based grave hunters Steve Goldstein, Mark Masek, & Jayne Osborne. After leaving Hillside Memorial Park, Steve and I had lunch at a nearby diner, which has out of this world sandwiches. Then I followed Steve in the Kia Forte I rented for the duration of my L.A. trip, to Holy Cross cemetery. We started out in the Grotto section which has the largest presence of celebrities buried in the cemetery. While we were in the Grotto section, Steve showed me the gravesite of the ORIGINAL Dracula, Bela Lugosi. Lugosi, loved his role as Dracula so much that when he passed away, he was buried in the actual cape he wore in the famed film. So that’s pretty much sums it up. I’ll be adding more photos to the slide show when I get a chance. Please stay tuned in the coming days where I’ll be revisiting the trek to Westwood Memorial Park cemetery, and Hollywood Forever.

Well its been seven months since I’ve made my inaugural trip to Los Angeles to visit the gravesites of the stars of Tinseltown. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about the people I’ve had the utmost honor of meeting, and becoming close friends with. During my inaugural trip, I snapped over 1,300 photos. Meanwhile as the insanity was pushing on full throttle, I was blogging every couple of days, with recaps from the previous days exploits. If your interested you can read all about the insanity I encountered by clicking the drop-down menu to the left of this page under categories then clicking on “Gravecations” which will take you to the page with links on this blog, to past gravecations I’ve been on to Chicago, & Los Angeles.

Moving along, being that I snapped a ridiculously, insane amount of photos. I just posted a sampling of a few photos from the previous days craziness, on the L.A. gravecation blog posts. So with that said I’ve got a little over 120 photos edited from the L.A. trip, which I’ll be showing you in the coming days. What I plan on doing is show casing every few days, the photos I’ve edited, in a classy photo slide show on the blog. Organized by cemetery these photos will give you a wider viewpoint of the gravesites I checked out while I was in Los Angeles.

Before you check out the photo slide show from Hillside Memorial Park. Let me give you a run down of its history. Hillside Memorial Park which is at 6001 West Centinela Ave, bordering the I-405 Freeway, was founded in the 1940s. Its conception took place when 10 leaders of the Jewish community in the Los Angeles area came together and pretty much purchased 40 acres of land which would soon be used as a cemetery. Hillside Memorial Park’s most notable resident in my opinion is Al Jolson, who’s towering monument can be seen by people cruising along on the 405 Freeway. Other residents who call this tranquil Jewish burial ground home, include Moe Howard of The Three Stooges, gangster Mickey Cohen, among other people. So lets check out that photo slide show.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So there you have it. When I get a chance, I’ll add more photos to the above photo slide show. The next cemetery I’ll be going over is Holy Cross cemetery, which is Hillside Memorial Park’s, nearby catholic counterpart.

LA Gravecation: Day 9-11 Sometimes Even The Best Things Need To End!

Mayer., Marion Mack, Mary Philbin, Pacific View Memorial Park, Paul Muni, Pola Negri, Ramon Novarro, Samuel Warner, Shemp Howard, Ted Healy, the original "Scarface" (1932), Westwood Memorial Park

On Thursday June 2nd I realized I had two days left to do some grave hunting before it was time to head home to Motown the following Saturday. So in typical fashion (as I usually do in situations such as this) I kicked things up a notch.

On Thursday, I decided to continue checking out what The OC (Orange County) cemeteries had to offer. So I cruised over to Pacific View Memorial Park which is in Corona Del Mar, California. Pacific View Memorial Park, is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I’ve ever visited in all my years in the hobby. At the top of the hill near the tranquil garden of cremains, you will find picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about taking any photos of the scenic ocean views. I seriously wish I did.

While I was at Pacific View Memorial Park, I found a decent amount famous people. The most famous of them all and probably in ALL of Orange County is western actor John Wayne. He’s buried several feet down the hillside slope from his first wife, and daughter. Another gravesite I strolled by and photographed was Charles Quilter who was a United States Marine Corps Major General. He served in three wars (WWII, Korea, & Vietnam).

Also at Pacific View Memorial Park, from the world of silent films I found the gravesite of Marion Mack, who is buried under her married name Joey Marion Lewyn. At the time of her death she was married to film producer Lewis Lewyn who is buried next to her. Also from the world of silent films I found the gravesite of Edmund “Eddie” Burns who got his start in motion pictures as an extra in the epic D.W. Griffith film The Birth of a Nation. So that pretty much wraps up Pacific View Memorial Park. There were a few other gravesites I photographed and others I planned to check out. But I left the cemetery to get a soda, and found my self driving down the coast, where I once again ended up in LA.

After arriving in LA, I stopped by the LA County Coroner’s office. Much to my surprise the LA County Coroner’s office has a gift shop there are only two coroners offices that have a gift shop the other being the Las Vegas coroners office, and to top it off my good friend Jayne Osborne works in the Notifications Department at the LA County Coroner’s office. So I thought I’d swing by and bought some official LA County Coroner swag. I bought two t-shirts, and a tank top. One of those shirts was for my good friend and Detroit graving sidekick, Beth. After leaving the gift shop at the coroner’s office, I went down to Hollywood Boulevard, and stopped by the Hollywood Harley-Davidson store. At the Hollywood HD store, I bought two t-shirts. One for me, and another for my friend Art.

After doing a little souvenir shopping for friends back home. I cruised over to Hollywood Forever cemetery again. After giving the security guard, a friendly wave as I drove through the gate. I stopped in the Jewish section of the cemetery. I then pulled out my trusty & colorful Hollywood Forever cemetery map, (which by the way I paid $5 bucks for) to pin point the location of Paul Muni. He was one of the gravesites I had the utmost wish to visit while I was in LA. So after some brief searching, I found his final resting place. Paul Muni’s gravesite is marked by a tall tree as most of the famous people in the cemetery have trees above their respective markers.

I heard from one of my friends during a previous trek of Hollywood Forever that a group of volunteers planted the trees at various celebrity gravesites in the cemetery to mark their gravesite. Anyway Paul Muni was in a series of great topnotch films during his heyday. Those films include “The Story of Louis Pasteur” where he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also starred in “The Life of Emil Zola” (1937), “The Good Earth” (1937), the original “Scarface” (1932), “Angel on My Shoulder” (1946) and “I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” (1932). I’ve only seen “I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” and the original “Scarface” both great films which I highly recommend. The original Scarface also stars George Raft who I visited the previous day. After everything I did Thursday, I headed back to Anaheim, but not before stopping by the cigar shop I found nearby where I was staying to pick up some cigars.

Friday being the last official day of grave hunting in LA, before heading home.  So what did I do? I went to five cemeteries located around the Los Angeles area. Being that my friends who accompanied me the previous days during the gravecation had other things to do. I wanted to make this day the day I would go all out and wrap up the great LA gravecation in a stunning array of insane blaze & glory. So off I went. The first cemetery I checked out on Friday was Calvary cemetery. Calvary is one of the oldest catholic cemeteries in Los Angeles. At Calvary I found gangster Jack Dragna, the silent film sibling trio, John, Ethel, & Lionel Barrymore, who got their start in silent films. Ramon Novarro who was a silent era actor, and early talkie film personality, he was brutally murdered by two brothers. Other celebrities I found at Calvary included silent era starlet Pola Negri, & Mary Philbin, Ted Healy who was the creator of The Three Stooges. There were a few more gravesites I found at Calvary but the names I mentioned should give you a general idea on who I found. If your interested you should check out Find a Grave.com for a good list of who’s buried there.

After leaving Calvary I drove across the street to its Jewish counterpart, namely Home of Peace cemetery. Before I get started with Home of Peace feel free to check out the Home of Peace page on Find a Grave. So let’s get underway. At Home of Peace, I found the gravesite of Curly & Shemp Howard of The Three Stooges, I also found comedian Harry Einstein, Carl Laemmle Sr. & Jr. MGM executive Louis B. Mayer. The Warner Bros (Harry, Jack, & Samuel), along with motion picture director Charles Vidor. So that pretty much sums up Home of Peace. At Eden Memorial Park, I found the gravesites of one of the greatest slapstick comedians of ALL time, Groucho Marx, I also found the gravesite of controversial yet hilarious comedian Lenny Bruce.

Rounding off Friday, I strolled over to Hollywood Forever again. At Hollywood Forever I tried to find the gravesite with no such luck of Tamara Toumanova who was a Russian actress, and ballerina. After leaving Hollywood Forever, I cruised over to Westwood Memorial Park yet again, to try to find the gravesite of James Wong Howe, who was a well-known cinematographer in the silent, and early talkie eras of Hollywood. Being that he was one of the gravesites I really wanted to find I unfortunately had no such luck. So I called an end to the very productive week-long graving extravaganza, went to the cigar shop I mentioned above, and called it a day.

While there is still very much more I want to see in LA, and Orange County. I gotta say I had one of the best gravecations in a LONG time. I met with some friends who up until recently I only corresponded with online. I hope to visit Los Angeles again in the very near future, hopefully one more time before I eventually move there. The area has a ridiculously insane amount of celebrities buried there.

LA Gravecation: Day 6-8 Things Are Winding Down.

Things are starting to wind down a bit. I’m pretty much done with strolling around the cemeteries in LA. There is still plenty of cemeteries I’d really like to check out in the LA area. But to be honest I think those cemeteries will have to wait until my next visit. So not to put a damper on things. Let me bring you all up to speed on what I’ve done the last three days.

On Monday, Memorial Day I went to the infamous Glendale location of the Forest Lawn conglomeration of cemeteries. I gotta tell you as much as I wanted to go frolicking around the grounds, I didn’t have much time to do so being that I was invited to tag along on my friend Scott Michaels Dearly Departed Tour in which he was giving later in the day. While I was at Forest Lawn Glendale, I met up with my friend David, and ran into yet another fan of mine & fellow Hollywood-Underground member the lovely Debra. Much like the other people who I’ve run into during my visit, she recognized me by my trademark floppy hat, and designer classes.

While I was at Forest Lawn Glendale, I didn’t have time to see much being that I had to be at the pickup location for Scott’s tour. What I did see were parts of the Great Mausoleum. Now keep in mind taking photos in the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn, is absolutely OFF-LIMITS. I had my camera on me but was advised by another friend who will remain anonymous, that I shouldn’t take any photos while inside the mausoleum. I will say this I was one of a few people to actually see Michael Jackson’s sarcophagus inside the mausoleum. So that pretty much sums up Forest Lawn Glendale.

After leaving Forest Lawn, I went down to Hollywood, so I could take tour I was invited to go on. If you remember, the other day I mentioned that Scott Michaels was the proprietor of Dearly Departed Tours. The tour is a unique approach to your typical Hollywood sightseeing tour. The tour consists of visiting the sites of Hollywood murder, and some sort of unforeseen scandal site. If your going to be in Hollywood anytime soon, and want to take a tour that is not your typical Hollywood sightseeing venue. I HIGHLY recommend taking a spin around Hollywood in one of Scott’s chauffeur driven air-conditioned van coaches to visit the sites of murder, mayhem, and scandal. Oh and before I forget here is the official site for Dearly Departed Tours.

On Day seven of my LA gravecation, I checked out the Forest Lawn location in the Hollywood Hills. This day was a really fun day. Joining me at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, was once again Scott Michaels, and Lisa Burks. It was like a match made in macabre heaven. The thing is what many of you don’t know is that like my self Scott, and Lisa are originally from Detroit but now reside in the Los Angeles area. So you can only imagine three people who at one time or another lived in Detroit, but were now strolling around Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills oh the humanity. If your interested my good friend Lisa has a blog, feel free to check it out.

So let’s get back on track. While I was at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills with the help of Scott, and Lisa I found a ton of gravesites. Some of the celebrity gravesites I found included metal god Ronnie James Dio, who passed away a little over a year ago from complications of cancer. Other gravesites I found included Tamara DeTreaux she was a little person who was the character E.T. in the film E.T. I also found the gravesite of Bette Davis, Liberace, Rod Steiger, George Raft, Freddie Prinze, Stan Laurel, Lou Rawls, Buster Keaton, and a bunch of others.

After I got done at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, I decided to look for a cigar shop. With no such luck, I decided to go with plan B and check out Galco’s Soda Pop Stop store. This place has an insane amount of soda. Before I came to LA I planned to check out Galco’s and pump some dough into the local economy. So I ended up buying six different bottles of soda I’ve never heard of. If you come to LA you gotta check this place out its unreal. After buying some soda, I headed back to Anaheim.

Today being day eight, I decided to check out some cemeteries in Orange County, CA. Let me just mention that there isn’t an insane amount of celebrity gravesites to be seen. But Orange county does have a decent contingent of celeb gravesites. Joining me for some Orange County grave hunting, was my friend Terry, a few of the celebs worth mentioning who we found at the Forest Lawn Cypress location were old gravesite of musician & singer Karen Carpenter, along with Angel Florez who was a Mickey Mouse Club alumnus who passed away from complications of HIV/AIDS.  Another person Terry, and I found at Forest Lawn Cypress was Eddie Cochran who was killed in a car accident while traveling the countryside in England.

Moving along we checked out Westminster cemetery. By far the most well-known celebrity at Westminster who we found was Brad Nowell who was the lead singer of the ska/punk band Sublime. He passed away after overdosing on heroin.  All in all I had a great few days. Stay tuned in the coming days as I’ll be visiting a few more cemeteries in Orange County, and then wrapping up my gravecation. I’m planning on visiting Pacific View cemetery either tomorrow or Friday. The most famous person at Pacific View is John Wayne, there are some other celebs buried there as well so stay turned.
