LA Gravecation: Day 4-5 The Insanity Continues

30 Monday May 2011

So being that I’ve been busy as all hell, checking out the dead celebrity hot spots in and around LA the past 5 days I haven’t been really up to doing much blogging because I’ve been extremely tired, with painfully sore feet. But keeping with the tradition of these week-long extravaganza gravecations I go on once a year. Here is the second installment covering Days 4 & 5 of my inaugural LA Gravecation. I figure throughout the trip I’ll post a new blog entry every few days, covering the previous few days I didn’t write anything.

Marilyn Monroe's Crypt at Westwood Memorial ParkSo lets rock on and get started. Day 4 began with me arriving at Westwood Memorial Park cemetery around 9:30am. Joining me at Westwood was my good friend Steve Goldstein. Before Steve arrived, I was strolling around the main part of the cemetery where out of nowhere I heard someone call my name so I turn around, and it was one of my Facebook friends and fellow Hollywood-Underground members Rosemary Duff. I didn’t know who she was until she introduced her self. I asked her how she recognized me, she mentioned something about my designer glasses, and my trademark floppy hat I wear when I grave hunt.

Moving along the cemetery is in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. The grounds cover about two acres of land and surrounded by tall office, and apartment buildings. There is a single road in the cemetery which circles the grounds in an oval like formation. Inside the oval you will probably find the largest cluster of dead celebrities, resting in eternal peace anywhere in the world. The outer part of the oval include private garden estates, and two separate mausoleum buildings with outdoor wall crypts. During the trek I observed maybe two private family mausoleums that of the Armand Hammer family, and the other I do not recall the name at the moment.

There are roughly 239 famous people buried or interred within the tranquil confines of Westwood. To name a few who are full-time residents in the cemetery include, but is not limited to Jim Backus who was the voice of Mr. Magoo, and the character Thurston Howell III, on the TV show Gilligan’s Island. Other such notables include Marilyn Monroe who is no doubt the most famous interment in the cemetery. Others include the comedic duo Walter Matthau, and Jack Lemmon, not to mention even though unmarked, Frank Zappa, & Roy Orbison rest undisturbed. On a given day you might stumble upon the elaborately designed marker of Don Knott’s who had a host of character roles over the years on television, most notably Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. The list of A Lister’s buried at Westwood goes on and on. If your more inclined to do so you can visit the Westwood Memorial Park page on Find A Grave.

Moving along the next cemetery Steve and I visited was Hollywood Forever cemetery. Joining us at Hollywood Forever was Jayne, &Silent Actress Barbara LaMarr's gravesite at Hollywood Forever Mark, who tagged along the previous day at Holy Cross. Three other people who should get the utmost honorable mention who joined us were Scott who is the curator & owner of the celebrity death website Find a Death.com, and owns the sought out and morbidly popular Dearly Departed Tours in Hollywood. Scott’s significant other Troy tagged along, as did Hollywood-Underground member Karen Fogerty. I gotta tell you it was a total honor to finally meet Scott, Troy, & Karen.

As with Westwood Memorial Park, Hollywood Forever has a ridiculously insane amount of celebs AND gangsters buried within its confines (I’ll get to a few of them in a moment). The cast of celebs past and present at Hollywood Forever would be good for a book. Speaking of which if you go to Hollywood Forever, be sure to swing by the gift shop to buy the official cemetery tour book, and get a map of the cemetery as well. The book is $20 bucks, and the map is $5 bucks. Here’s another good tip, when you pass by the guard booth, just give the overzealous rent a pig a friendly wave, because photos according to them are not allowed. But when your walking around the cemetery, keep your camera in your pocket or discreetly hidden in your hand at your side.

Tyrone Power's gravesite at Hollywood ForeverThe cast of characters buried in Hollywood Forever would give you a good 3 hours or more, walking around the cemetery. The names etched on the monuments, crypts, and other forms of marble & granite symbolism, are names that have to do with the old and new eras of Hollywood. To name a few Cecil B. DeMille is there, along with Tyrone Power. From the world of silent films comes Rudolf Valentino, Barbara LaMarr, William Desmond Taylor, etc. Some of the newer full-time residents include Dee Dee & Johnny Ramone of the punk band The Ramones, Estelle Getty from the TV show The Golden Girls, and so many others. So that concludes day four. If your interested you might want to check out the Hollywood Forever page on Find a Grave.

After we were finished at Hollywood Forever. I joined Jayne, & Mark, Scott, Troy, and Karen, at The El Coyote Mexican Cafe, for a much-needed bs session, followed by feasting on taco’s, guacamole, and salsa. El Coyote’s has been a LA fixture for over 80 years. It’s steeped in history, as I’m sure many a celeb has chowed down on the delicious fare the restaurant has to offer. Here’s a juicy piece of Hollywood gossip related to El Coyote’s. Sharon Tate who you might have remembered was one of the Manson Family murder victims, ate her last meal at El Coyote’s

Today being the fifth day I’ve been in the Los Angeles area. I originally planned to just lay low to rest my feet, maybe smoke some cigars, and kick back. But true to the grave hunter code, I couldn’t let the day pass and not hit some cemeteries. So I went to Hollywood Forever yet again. Yesterday while I was there the official Hollywood Forever tour guide Karie Bible, invited me to tag along on the tour she was giving today.

So I arrived at the cemetery a few hours early, I purchased the book & map I mentioned above. The tour Karie, was giving today was the Hidden Hollywood Tour. The tour included obscure stars who have been lost or forgotten over time. It was a really informative tour, and to boot since the Jewish section was closed yesterday, Karie took the guests who were on the tour to the Jewish section of Hollywood Forever. We saw gangsters Bugsy Siegle, Moe Sedway’s respective crypts inside the mausoleum. So that’s pretty much how the past two days went. If your interested Karie has a website about the tours she gives you can find the website here.

Please stay tuned in the coming days for more updates. Tomorrow I’ll be visiting Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, and hopefully the Forest Lawn location in the Hollywood Hills section of LA.

I arrived in Anaheim, two days ago. As stated the other day I departed Detroit around 6:55am. I arrived at the airport around 4:30am. After checking in, going through the hassling process of a TSA pat down, I arrived at the gate for departure. The plane ride was really nice. I had a layover in Denver, the airport was nice but cold. After arriving at my destination, I just hung out for a while, I found a nearby cigar shop, with over priced cigars so I ended up buying two Don Tomas cigars. They weren’t bad to smoke.

The next day was fairly uneventful. Being that I would be doing what I came to Southern California to do and that is grave hunt. I decided to head to LA from Anaheim, to get a general feel for the area. I stopped by Hillside Memorial Park which is a beautiful Jewish cemetery in Culver City, CA. The grounds have nicely manicured lawns, friendly staff, did I mention the cemetery is also tourist friendly as well? After leaving Hillside, I went over to Hollywood Forever to briefly check the place out. After being interrogated by the little police academy rejected security guard, I was a little discouraged about taking any photos. So I just drove in then found a side exit and made my departure. I’ll be talking more about Hollywood Forever cemetery tomorrow, as that’s where I plan on visiting.

Now being that today is Friday May 27th. Today was the official kick-off day in which I got started doing LA style celebrity grave hunting. I met up with my very good friend Steve Goldstein (you might remember him from episode 5 of the grave hunting podcast) as I interviewed him about his exploits in grave hunting. Needless to say we met up at the mausoleum at the top of the hill behind the Al Jolson monument. And that’s where the tour began.

After snapping a few more photos of the Al Jolson monument, from which I photographed the previous day, we headed into the mausoleum where we found such Hollywood luminaries as Aaron Spelling (who is the father of Tori Spelling), Comedian & Actor Ben Blue, Eddie Cantor, Michael Landon, Max Factor Sr., & Jr. A few other names worth mentioning who Steve showed me the gravesites of included Sorrel Booke, he was the sheriff “Boss Hogg” on the Dukes of Hazzard TV show. Moe Howard of the Three Stooges is also there, along with LA gangster Mickey Cohn.

Comedian Ben Blue's gravesite.

Moving along the next cemetery Steve showed me was Holy Cross cemetery, which is located down the street from Hillside. At this cemetery we checked out the gravesites of Zasu Pitts, Sharon Tate, Ray Bolger, Bela Lugosi, John Candy, Chris Penn, and a few dozen more celebrities buried in the cemetery. Another thing I’d like to point out before I forget my good friends, and fellow gravers Jayne, and Mark, joined Steve and my self at Holy Cross. All in all it was a great day. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post as I’ll be frolicking over to Westwood Memorial Park, and Hollywood Forever. One final thing I’d like to mention is that despite the fact that I have both my camcorder, and digital camera with me. My good friend Steve noted that it’s not a good idea to be strolling around the cemetery with the camcorder. So unfortunately I wont be using my camcorder in the cemeteries I visit while out in LA. BUT my digital camera has a feature where it shoots HD quality videos. So starting tomorrow I might experiment with recording videos with my digital camera. All in all I’m absolutely loving it out here. The weather is beautiful, and I’m having some quality bonding time, some soon to be life long friends.

Leaving For LA In Two Days!

23 Monday May 2011

As mentioned in the blog post on March 4th 2011. I announced, to the world my plans on taking a trip in May to sunny Los Angeles. Well the time has finally come for me to pack my bags, cameras, graving books and what not. Board the plane and jet set to the west coast. The plane departs Detroit at 6:55am, after a brief layover in Denver, I’ll be arriving at the Ontario, CA airport a little after 10am, at which point I’ll be picking up the economy size car I previously arranged to rent. After that’s said and done, off I’ll go into the abyss.

There is a full cast, of cemeteries in Los Angeles, and Orange County, I plan on checking out while I’m in the area. Some of those cemeteries include Hillside, Holy Cross, Inglewood, Hollywood Forever, Westwood Memorial Park, and a few select cemeteries in Orange County. Much like I did when I went to Chicago last June. I plan to blog, on a daily basis about the photos I’ve shot, my thoughts, and other things. So please stay tuned. I can’t begin to elaborate how much I’ve ached to set foot in Southern California. This is like a dream come true for me. It’s kinda like meeting some famous celebrity face to face, well in my case I’ll be standing 6ft above their corpse.

The Morbid One's Big Adventure

04 Friday Mar 2011

As I’m sitting on this fancy leather couch in the confines, of the elegantly decorated cigar lounge, puffing on a cigar, staring down the deer head on the wall in front of me. I thought I’d bring you all up to speed on some things. Well for starters its been a known fact for some time now about an utmost desire of mine to visit Los Angeles, California. Well due to a recent surge in my financial state as I’d like to say. I’ve been fortunate enough to fund a trip to LA.

I’ll be visiting Los Angeles the last week in May up into the first weekend in June. On the agenda for that week of grave hunting I plan on doing. I doubt I’ll be able to check out all the bone yard hot spots while I’m in town. I’m gonna try to pack in as much grave hunting as I can handle during the week and a half I’ll be there. I’ve already reserved a rental car w/navigation system, and I already procured round trip airfare. I’ll be staying with some relatives who live in Anaheim.

This trip will be an adventure because I’ve never been to LA. So I’ll be taking the days in stride, grave hunting, until there are painful blisters on my feet. So that’s whats up for now. As with earlier “gravecations” I’ve been on most notably Chicago, and beyond. I’ll no doubt be giving you my loyal viewers all 20 of you LOL daily updates on the days finds, plus my thoughts and what not on the bone yards I visit.
