Gifts For Grave Hunters, Grave Hunting Gifts, Holiday Gift Ideas, Macabre Gifts, Morbid Gifts

With Christmas & Hanukkah just around the corner I decided to promote some gift ideas I thought you the “gift giver” would like for that lovable yet morbid grave hunter, death hag, celebrity death freak, in your life.

First on the list is the 2011 Year In Death Calender. This is not your typical monthly calendar.  For each day in the 12 months of the year. The calendar lists a celebrity or other noteworthy person who dropped dead on that particular day, then to spice things up just a bit the cause of death is also listed.  The calendar is accompanied by a tasteful, yet morbidly creative photo montage  for each month.

The 2011 Year In Death Calendar retails for $24.99 with shipping included in the U S of A. Unfortunately if you live in Canada or  elsewhere in the world the price is increased.

If your interested in giving the calendar to the morbid one in your life for any gift giving reason. There are two ways to buy the calendar. The first way  is the easiest just go to cemeteryguide.com on the main page you will see the cover of the calendar. Click on the link where it says “click here” (or if your more inclined to do so) you can just click here. And be taken directly to the page on the Cemetery Guide website. Here’s the second way to buy this snazzy, one of a kind “I just gotta have it” calendar. If you live in the Los Angeles area you can find the calendar at Larry Edmund’s Bookstore.

Next up I present to you the “gift giver” some reasonably priced DVD’s which would be the perfect stocking stuffer for the morbidly devout death hag. First on the DVD list is Dearly Departed Vol. I. According to the product description “Dearly Departed Vol. I which is hosted by nationally recognized Tinseltown historian Scott Michaels. Is an all-access tour of the “backlots” of L.A.–locations where the most infamous murders, suicides and bizarre crimes involving A-listers have taken place.”

The second DVD I highly recommend as the perfect stocking stuffer for the morbid one in your life or anyone interested in the Manson murders. Is Dearly Departed Vol. II also known as The Six Degree’s of Helter Skelter.

According to the description “The Six Degrees of Helter Skelter is a hauntingly unique retelling of the notorious Manson Family Murders. With original Manson Family music recordings, rare vintage photos of the story’s major players, and never-before-seen autopsy reports, viewers are taken on an insightful exploration of over 40 key locations associated with the spree that rocked Los Angeles – and shocked the world – in August 1969″ SERIOUSLY recommended its bone chilling good.

And finally the last DVD which comes highly recommended by the Motorcity Morbid One is “Grave Hunting With Steve: A Journey Beneath Los Angeles” According to the product description “Join author and grave hunter Steve Goldstein as we dig up 100 years of Hollywood history through extensive tours of Hollywood Forever, Hillside Memorial Park, and Holy Cross cemeteries, including the gravesites and stories of Al Jolson, Aaron Spelling, Cecil B. De Mille, Griffith J. Griffith, John Huston, Rudolph Valentino, Moe Howard, Dee Dee Ramone, Meyer “Mickey” Cohen, Eddie and Toni Mannix, Jack Benny, Bela Lugosi, John Candy, Sharon Tate, and dozens more.

One thing I’d like to mention is that I do not own the copyright to the photos posted above. They are all copyright their respective owners. I was just using the photos to showcase what the cover of the items looked like.

For those of you into classic films with a particular interest in the silent era. I highly recommend checking out my latest project The Forever Classics blog.

Having an interest in the classic films of years past. And a budding desire to watch the films of the silent era, and other classics. Coupled with the need to read biographical narrations on the personalities of yesterdays cinema scene. I’ve decided to create a blog where I can document my findings with reviews on classic films, and film related books, and pretty much anything related to the classic eras of the film industry starting with the silent era.

Keep in mind modern films will not be included  unless it was deemed a classic in some way. So feel free to check out my latest project Forever Classics.

Let me bring you all up to speed on a few things. As mentioned before I’m in the process of re-uploading, & editing my older films I have on YouTube. Each video I upload will include photos, and voice-over narration. With that said I finally figured out how to repost the films I upload to YouTube on my blog.

I used to be able to copy the coding from YouTube and then paste the film on the blog. But for some insane reason the coding allowed on WordPress changed. So here is the latest video I’ve uploaded to You Tube.

My latest film is on psychopathic prohibition era Chicago gangster Frank McErlane. The footage is from the original footage I recorded about two maybe three years ago in Holy Sepulchre cemetery, in Alsip, Illinois which is a Chicago suburb. Let me know what you think, feel free to favorite, and rate my film.

Douglas Keister, Forever L.A. A Field Guide To Los Angeles Area Cemeteries & Their Residents, Grave Hunting, Grave Hunting Books

Recently I got a copy of the book “Forever L.A. A Field Guide To Los Angeles Area Cemeteries & Their Residents” by Douglas Keister. The publisher is Gibbs-Smith and retails for $19.99 at your local, or favorite online bookstore and has 156 pages.

The Low Down:

This was the first book I’ve read by the critically acclaimed author and photographer Douglas Keister.  Not being too familiar with Doug’s work besides what I’ve read about him online. I was seriously looking forward to what he had to offer in this book.

In the first half of the book Doug takes the readers on a tour of 12 of the main cemeteries in Los Angeles.  A sampling of those cemeteries include but is not limited to Forest Lawn Glendale,  & Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills,  Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Inglewood Memorial Park, & Westwood Village Memorial Park.

The second half of the book covers architecture found in the cemetery, symbols, secret societies/clubs which have their symbols adorned on grave markers, etc.

While not everyone who was famous in Hollywood is mentioned  most of the key figures are. Were talking you got The Three Stooges, Rudolf Valentino, George Burns & Gracie Allen, and the list goes on.

The nicely detailed colorful photos were one of my favorite things about the book. Add that for pretty much everyone listed in this book GPS coordinates are included.  One of the neat things I thought was nice about this book is that it was small enough to fit in your back pocket, but big enough where the typeset wouldn’t hurt the eyes.

One feature I thought was really classy was the fact that in the back of the book. There is a fold out map which lists the major roads with a caricature which represents the cemeteries in the greater Los Angeles area. Another thing I thought was helpful in the back of the book there was a complete listing of practically all the cemeteries in and around Los Angeles with GPS coördinates, and contact/website info included.

Bottom Line:

This book must be at the top of your list of grave hunting books to buy. Its got everything a grave hunting book should have, and more. Plus it comes HIGHLY recommended by me.

Book Review: Celebrity Death Certificates Vol. I By M.F. Steen

Celebrity Death, Celebrity Death Certificates, Celebrity Death Certificates Vol. I, M.F. Steen, Michael Steen, Mike Steen

One of the things I really enjoy about grave hunting is the acquisition of books. As mentioned books are a very essential part of the hobby. Not only are their grave hunting books on specific cemeteries, & geographic regions, but there are reference works which act like large databases listing thousands of names with biographical, and cemetery info. Lets not forget other works which are encyclopedias of sorts which have biographical info highlighting the deaths and demise of celebrities.

Another literary genre that has come to light in recent years. Are books which highlight photocopy collections, of death certificates, of celebrities. While these books are somewhat short on biographical info, the main feature is the real death certificate of your favorite celebrity.

One such title is Death Certificates Vol. I by Michael F. Steen.  To begin the publisher is McFarland Publishing. McFarland publishes a wide assortment of titles. Mostly reference works of various genres, biographies on classic celebrities, among others. The book has 202 pages and retails for $39.95 I managed to find a brand new copy for $31.94 with shipping.  There are 185 death certificates in this book, with brief biographical info listed in the end of the book.

Some of the celebrities whose death certificates grace the pages of this marvelous work include but is not limited to, Thema Todd, Dirk & Dack Rambo, W.C. Fields, Walt Disney, Clara Bow, Al Jolson, The Three Stooges, and the list goes on. This book must be in the library of any self-respecting grave hunter, celebrity death hag, death certificate collector, or anyone who is fascinated by the glitz and glamor of Hollywood’s élite from yesterday and today.

The only thing I didn’t like about the book which is a minor issue. Is that I wish instead for the biographical info in the back of the book. I would have liked to of seen the biographical info included on the page with each death certificate. So I’m hoping the next two volumes which have already been published fix that minor error.

With all that said and done I HIGHLY recommend this title. You might also be interested in obtaining Michael Steen’s other two volumes under the same name. Both of those titles I have not obtained but I am planning on obtaining in the very near future.
