Today’s Tombstone Tuesday highlight is the grave of WWII Medal of Honor Recipient Anthony L. Krotiak. Born in Chicago in 1915 Krotiak enlisted in the United States Army on November 24th, 1941.

His Medal of Honor citation reads:

He was an acting squad leader, directing his men in consolidating a newly won position on Hill B when the enemy concentrated small arms fire and grenades upon him and 4 others, driving them to cover in an abandoned Japanese trench. A grenade thrown from above landed in the center of the group. Instantly pushing his comrades aside and jamming the grenade into the earth with his rifle butt, he threw himself over it, making a shield of his body to protect the other men. The grenade exploded under him, and he died a few minutes later. By his extraordinary heroism in deliberately giving his life to save those of his comrades, Pfc. Krotiak set an inspiring example of utter devotion and self-sacrifice which reflects the highest traditions of the military service.

For the sacrifice of his life to save those around him. Pfc Krotiak was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor the following year during a ceremony on February 13th, 1946. He was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois next to his parents in Section: 23 Block: 14 Lot: 8.

Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery

Here are two new videos I’ve recently uploaded to my You Tube Page. The first one is entitled “A Walk Through Holy Sepulchre Cemetery: Hollywood Types” in this particular video I take you to visit the grave site of Jay Sebring who had the misfortune of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. And that was he was murdered with his friends Sharon Tate, Abagail Folger and a few of their friends.  At the hands of Charles Manson and his motley crew of followers. The other person in the Hollywood Types video is Helen Carey who won an Academy Award and an Oscar for various short animated films she created which played in between movies during a matinée showing.

The second video is part one of the athletes of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Included in part one is a former owner of the Major League Baseball Team The Detroit Tigers, as well as various baseball stars, a hockey player or two, etc. I still have some more footage to work on for that cemetery so stay tuned.

Barney McCosky, Elmwood Cemetery, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Owen P. Hammerberg, Steve Gromek

Yesterday I trekked on over to Holy Sepulcher Catholic cemetery on 10 mile a few blocks west of Telegraph in the stunning city of Southfield, Michigan. Being that I got the day started somewhat late I had to get there before the office closed at 4. And in this respect I didn’t have time to write out the usual note card biographies I use for the camcorder narration. Instead I just picked three grave sites to track down and that was it. I figured I’ll go back to Holy Sepulcher this week coming up to do some videography and more photos.

Anyway about yesterday’s trip. I found three grave sites they were  Owen P. Hammerberg who was a WWII Medal of Honor recipient who served in Hawaii when the Japanese went nuts, Steve Gromek & Barney McCosky who were both Major League baseball players. As I was walking back to my car from Owen’s grave site. An older gentleman came driving up in a minivan and we ended up getting into a discussion about Owen’s grave site and how he was the only Medal of Honor recipient in the cemetery then we talked about various other notables buried in the cemetery I mentioned a few mafia guys and what not and a few other ball players. Then we parted ways.

Today I went downtown to Elmwood cemetery for the millionth time this month I was there about four hours my day got cut short unfortunately when the batteries in my digital camera went dead. Before quitting for the day my dad surprised me at the cemetery for what ever reason I have no idea so I took him on a mini tour of the area in Elmwood I was in.

To summarize I had two splendid days at the cemetery. I really enjoy running into people and getting into discussions about various people buried in them.

Josh
