Well it’s that time of year again where I publish the annual Gravecast Holiday Gift Guide. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or perhaps Kwanzaa. These gifts I have listed are sure to brighten up the faces of anyone on your shopping list who is hard to buy for, or has macabre thoughts, interests, & tendencies. So without further adieu here is my list. Direct links will be provided where you can buy these splendid gifts.

First on the list is the 2012 “Year in Death” calendar. To give you a little background on how this fabulous calendar came about. The calendar started out in 2010. The popularity of the “Year In Death” calendar pretty much skyrocketed when it was first published. Needless to say the creators of the calendar decided to create the 2011, and now 2012 editions of the calendar. Here’s a quote from Mark Masek about the soon to be famous “Year In Death” calendar.

Once again, “The Year in Death” calendar will help you remember and honor your favorite celebrities and well-known names from history on the anniversary of their passing. For every day of the year, we identify a celebrity who died on that day, the year they died, and the cause of death. Also, for each month, we feature an original photo montage, designed and created especially for “The Year in Death” calendar by Scott Michaels, founder of Dearly Departed Tours, the man behind the phenomenal Find-A-Death website, and L.A.’s No. 1 Death Hag. And once again this year, the calendar is co-created, co-sponsored and co-presented by your dear friends at The Adipocere Society and CemeteryGuide.com. -Mark Masek CemeteryGuide.com

If your interested in purchasing the 2012 Year In Death Calendar you should visit CemeteryGuide.com

Next on the 2011 Gravecast Holiday Gift Guide list are the marvelous “Death Hag Swag” and other morbidly useful goodies being sold on the Find A Death website. Scott Michaels who owns Find A Death.com, along with the highly recommended Dearly Departed Tours in Hollywood. Recently had some tastefully classy t-shirts created to promote his website Find A Death, and sister  company Dearly Departed Tours. On the F.A.D. store which you can find by visiting Find A Death.com you will find a nice assortment of t-shirts, license plate frames, the DVD’s Dearly Departed Vol. 1, and The Six Degree’s of Helter Skelter, along with some celebrity memorabilia with a ghoulish twist.

If the above sites don’t suit your tastes which they more than likely will. Let me introduce you to The Skeletons In The Closet Gift Shoppe THE official gift shop for the L.A. County Coroners office. Here’s a little morbid trivia for you, there are only two coroners offices in the United States which have a gift shop. L.A. being one of them, the other being the Las Vegas Coroners office. Needless to say you will no doubt find something that will entice your interests.

Next up, if the above items do not suit your macabre tastes, for the upcoming Holiday gift giving extravaganza. You might be interested in the book “L.A.’s Graveside Companion: Where The VIP’s RIP”. Written by the grave hunting story telling genius, and frequent contributor to Gravecast, Steve Goldstein. If you do buy the book on Amazon which is linked above, you might also be interested in the companion DVD “Grave Hunting With Steve: A Journey Beneath Los Angeles”

And finally I can’t forget the e-book “Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills: The Unauthorized Guide” by Mark Masek, who is another contributor to Gravecast. I do not own this e-book “yet” BUT I do own other e-books Mark has published and let me tell you, Mark is one of the people in the know when it comes to Hollywood celebrity gravesites. On a lighter note, if your interested in purchasing his “unauthorized” guides to Forest Lawn Glendale, or Hollywood Forever. I invite you to check out the Amazon Kindle Store.

In episode 06 of The Gravecast Show. I got a chance recently to interview my good friend Scott Michaels, who is the proprietor of the Hollywood tour company Dearly Departed Tours, and Find A Death.com, not only that he’s a Hollywood Historian, who’s been featured on several nationally syndicated TV shows related to famous/infamous Hollywood murders, and scandals.

LA Gravecation: Day 6-8 Things Are Winding Down.

Things are starting to wind down a bit. I’m pretty much done with strolling around the cemeteries in LA. There is still plenty of cemeteries I’d really like to check out in the LA area. But to be honest I think those cemeteries will have to wait until my next visit. So not to put a damper on things. Let me bring you all up to speed on what I’ve done the last three days.

On Monday, Memorial Day I went to the infamous Glendale location of the Forest Lawn conglomeration of cemeteries. I gotta tell you as much as I wanted to go frolicking around the grounds, I didn’t have much time to do so being that I was invited to tag along on my friend Scott Michaels Dearly Departed Tour in which he was giving later in the day. While I was at Forest Lawn Glendale, I met up with my friend David, and ran into yet another fan of mine & fellow Hollywood-Underground member the lovely Debra. Much like the other people who I’ve run into during my visit, she recognized me by my trademark floppy hat, and designer classes.

While I was at Forest Lawn Glendale, I didn’t have time to see much being that I had to be at the pickup location for Scott’s tour. What I did see were parts of the Great Mausoleum. Now keep in mind taking photos in the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn, is absolutely OFF-LIMITS. I had my camera on me but was advised by another friend who will remain anonymous, that I shouldn’t take any photos while inside the mausoleum. I will say this I was one of a few people to actually see Michael Jackson’s sarcophagus inside the mausoleum. So that pretty much sums up Forest Lawn Glendale.

After leaving Forest Lawn, I went down to Hollywood, so I could take tour I was invited to go on. If you remember, the other day I mentioned that Scott Michaels was the proprietor of Dearly Departed Tours. The tour is a unique approach to your typical Hollywood sightseeing tour. The tour consists of visiting the sites of Hollywood murder, and some sort of unforeseen scandal site. If your going to be in Hollywood anytime soon, and want to take a tour that is not your typical Hollywood sightseeing venue. I HIGHLY recommend taking a spin around Hollywood in one of Scott’s chauffeur driven air-conditioned van coaches to visit the sites of murder, mayhem, and scandal. Oh and before I forget here is the official site for Dearly Departed Tours.

On Day seven of my LA gravecation, I checked out the Forest Lawn location in the Hollywood Hills. This day was a really fun day. Joining me at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, was once again Scott Michaels, and Lisa Burks. It was like a match made in macabre heaven. The thing is what many of you don’t know is that like my self Scott, and Lisa are originally from Detroit but now reside in the Los Angeles area. So you can only imagine three people who at one time or another lived in Detroit, but were now strolling around Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills oh the humanity. If your interested my good friend Lisa has a blog, feel free to check it out.

So let’s get back on track. While I was at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills with the help of Scott, and Lisa I found a ton of gravesites. Some of the celebrity gravesites I found included metal god Ronnie James Dio, who passed away a little over a year ago from complications of cancer. Other gravesites I found included Tamara DeTreaux she was a little person who was the character E.T. in the film E.T. I also found the gravesite of Bette Davis, Liberace, Rod Steiger, George Raft, Freddie Prinze, Stan Laurel, Lou Rawls, Buster Keaton, and a bunch of others.

After I got done at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, I decided to look for a cigar shop. With no such luck, I decided to go with plan B and check out Galco’s Soda Pop Stop store. This place has an insane amount of soda. Before I came to LA I planned to check out Galco’s and pump some dough into the local economy. So I ended up buying six different bottles of soda I’ve never heard of. If you come to LA you gotta check this place out its unreal. After buying some soda, I headed back to Anaheim.

Today being day eight, I decided to check out some cemeteries in Orange County, CA. Let me just mention that there isn’t an insane amount of celebrity gravesites to be seen. But Orange county does have a decent contingent of celeb gravesites. Joining me for some Orange County grave hunting, was my friend Terry, a few of the celebs worth mentioning who we found at the Forest Lawn Cypress location were old gravesite of musician & singer Karen Carpenter, along with Angel Florez who was a Mickey Mouse Club alumnus who passed away from complications of HIV/AIDS.  Another person Terry, and I found at Forest Lawn Cypress was Eddie Cochran who was killed in a car accident while traveling the countryside in England.

Moving along we checked out Westminster cemetery. By far the most well-known celebrity at Westminster who we found was Brad Nowell who was the lead singer of the ska/punk band Sublime. He passed away after overdosing on heroin.  All in all I had a great few days. Stay tuned in the coming days as I’ll be visiting a few more cemeteries in Orange County, and then wrapping up my gravecation. I’m planning on visiting Pacific View cemetery either tomorrow or Friday. The most famous person at Pacific View is John Wayne, there are some other celebs buried there as well so stay turned.

Dearly Departed Tours, Dearly Departed Vol I, Dearly Departed Volume One, Scott Michaels

Recently to cope with my never-ending quest to be in Southern California and my wish to learn as much as I can on how celebrities died. I took the liberty and ordered Dearly Departed Volumes I & II. Volume I arrived the last week in the mail so here is the review on Volume I of the DVD series Dearly Departed.

To begin Volume I is hosted by well-known celebrity death buff Scott Michaels. He also owns and maintains the websites Find A Death & Dearly Departed Tours. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I know of who knows his stuff on general celebrity gossip and scandals in Tinseltown. He’s been featured on the TV show E!’s “20 Most Horrifying Hollywood Murders” and has done a few online radio interviews. In the documentary Scott takes you on a tour of 18 celebrity death sites. Some of the demise of the celebrities featured in the documentary are well-known due to the vulgarity and in some cases perverse ending in their lives.

Combined with morbid humor and interesting commentary which many consider to not be tasteful in respect to the dead celebrity. Scott brings an interesting approach to how these celebrities died by using official documents such as death certificates and hours of research and in a few cases he actually tours the locations of where the celebrities died. His knowledge on how celebrities died and his way of presenting the stories are an interesting combination.

If you’re the type of person who is interested in the way famous people met their untimely demise and have the courage to take it all in based on the way Scott presents his stories. I highly suggest buying Dearly Departed Volume I. He brings his fascination with celebrity deaths and years of research into one delightful sensationally packed DVD.
