As some of you know I’m doing L.A. Gravecation Revisited posts for the next few days. The next cemetery being featured is Holy Cross cemetery, which is at 5835 West Slauson Avenue, Culver City, California. Holy Cross cemetery encompasses 200 acres of lush manicured lawns, a grotto section, and a few mausoleum buildings. The cemetery is owned and managed by the archdiocese of Los Angeles, and includes a full cast of celebrity personalities from the golden years of Hollywood, up into today. If your interested I invite you to check out the Holy Cross cemetery Wikipedia page, or Find A Grave, to check out the who’s who list of celebrities buried in this tranquil catholic cemetery.

Joining me at Holy Cross cemetery, were my very good friends & L.A. based grave hunters Steve Goldstein, Mark Masek, & Jayne Osborne. After leaving Hillside Memorial Park, Steve and I had lunch at a nearby diner, which has out of this world sandwiches. Then I followed Steve in the Kia Forte I rented for the duration of my L.A. trip, to Holy Cross cemetery. We started out in the Grotto section which has the largest presence of celebrities buried in the cemetery. While we were in the Grotto section, Steve showed me the gravesite of the ORIGINAL Dracula, Bela Lugosi. Lugosi, loved his role as Dracula so much that when he passed away, he was buried in the actual cape he wore in the famed film. So that’s pretty much sums it up. I’ll be adding more photos to the slide show when I get a chance. Please stay tuned in the coming days where I’ll be revisiting the trek to Westwood Memorial Park cemetery, and Hollywood Forever.

The Great L.A. Gravecation of 2011 Revisited – Hillside Memorial Park

Well its been seven months since I’ve made my inaugural trip to Los Angeles to visit the gravesites of the stars of Tinseltown. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about the people I’ve had the utmost honor of meeting, and becoming close friends with. During my inaugural trip, I snapped over 1,300 photos. Meanwhile as the insanity was pushing on full throttle, I was blogging every couple of days, with recaps from the previous days exploits. If your interested you can read all about the insanity I encountered by clicking the drop-down menu to the left of this page under categories then clicking on “Gravecations” which will take you to the page with links on this blog, to past gravecations I’ve been on to Chicago, & Los Angeles.

Moving along, being that I snapped a ridiculously, insane amount of photos. I just posted a sampling of a few photos from the previous days craziness, on the L.A. gravecation blog posts. So with that said I’ve got a little over 120 photos edited from the L.A. trip, which I’ll be showing you in the coming days. What I plan on doing is show casing every few days, the photos I’ve edited, in a classy photo slide show on the blog. Organized by cemetery these photos will give you a wider viewpoint of the gravesites I checked out while I was in Los Angeles.

Before you check out the photo slide show from Hillside Memorial Park. Let me give you a run down of its history. Hillside Memorial Park which is at 6001 West Centinela Ave, bordering the I-405 Freeway, was founded in the 1940s. Its conception took place when 10 leaders of the Jewish community in the Los Angeles area came together and pretty much purchased 40 acres of land which would soon be used as a cemetery. Hillside Memorial Park’s most notable resident in my opinion is Al Jolson, who’s towering monument can be seen by people cruising along on the 405 Freeway. Other residents who call this tranquil Jewish burial ground home, include Moe Howard of The Three Stooges, gangster Mickey Cohen, among other people. So lets check out that photo slide show.

So there you have it. When I get a chance, I’ll add more photos to the above photo slide show. The next cemetery I’ll be going over is Holy Cross cemetery, which is Hillside Memorial Park’s, nearby catholic counterpart.

Changes Coming To The Gravecast Podcast And Blog!

Hey I wanted to bring you all up to speed on some things. Well for starters as mentioned a few blog posts back, I’m going to start including info on paranormal ghost hunting. As I feel ghost hunting, and grave hunting intersect in various ways. So to help diversify things on Gravecast, I feel it would be essential to include ghost hunting topics on the blog. To help kick things off with the ghost hunting aspect. I listed a few books on the required reading list related to ghost hunting which I’ve recently purchased, and currently reading.

Now that I’ve got the ghost hunting venture out-of-the-way. Another thing I’m planning on doing relates to The Gravecast podcast. I’ve noticed when ever I’d post new episodes of the podcast, there would be a spike in the number of people browsing the blog, and listening in to who I’d be interviewing from the world of grave hunting.

To help boost the viewers even more, I’m working on having one of my very good friends from LA, co-host the Gravecast show with me. I feel this will add a different point of view to what the interviewees’ have to say in their informative & insightful responses to the questions my self, and my co-host ask, plus it would make things a little more interesting.

The future co-host I’m talking about is noted author, & cemetery historian, Steve Goldstein who wrote the book “LA’s Graveside Companion: Where The V.I.P’s R.I.P.” is also the proprietor of the website Beneath Los Angeles. Steve’s got a ton of experience in grave hunting, not only that he’s a helluva nice guy, very personable as well, who I was delighted to of met when I visited Los Angeles last Spring. Needless to say I think he will be the perfect co-host of the show.
